Newcastle United have been ‘offered’ an opportunity to sign Brazilian winger Tete after he impressed during the first half of a loan spell with Ligue 1 club Lyon.

The 22-year-old is currently contracted to Shakhtar Donetsk but moved to France on loan last March after FIFA suspended contracts of foreign players in Ukraine following the Russian invasion. The deal will cover the remainder of the 2022/23 season but 90Mins have reported that a January departure could be a possibility after Tete shone just the first half of the campaign.

The former Gremio star has netted eight goals and provided eight assists in 25 appearances for Lyon with over half of those goal contributions coming during the last four months. The appointment of former Manchester United defender Laurent Blanc has placed doubt over Tete’s future at the club and the report has stated Newcastle, West Ham, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have all been ‘sounded out’ about a potential move for the winger.

Tete has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past and assessed a possible move to England during an interview with Brazilian outlet TNT Sports in April 2020, saying: “Three clubs are part of my dream in Europe: Barcelona, Manchester United and Liverpool. Gigantic clubs with fantastic managers and an incredible number of trophies. As a player, I dream of winning important titles and those clubs are incredible options to achieve that.

“I know United and Liverpool are rivals. But, if the moment of choosing one of them actually came about I would have to choose wisely. The Premier League is an extraordinary competition, the game is played at a great pace, there are lots of great managers and great clubs.”

Southampton have also been linked with a move for Tete after coming close to signing the Brazil Under-23 star during the summer transfer window.
