Newcastle United took a huge step towards securing a Champions League spot on Sunday with a comfortable home win over Tottenham.
Eddie Howe’s men scored five first-half goals to stun their visitors, and they never looked back, going on to win 6-1 and moving up to third place as a result. It was a statement performance from the Magpies, and it will also go down as one of the biggest Premier League wins in the club’s history.

Newcastle’s biggest win came back in 1946 when the Magpies defeated Newport County 13-0 in the old First Division at St James’ Park. Their biggest Premier League win came back in 1999 with an 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, and Alan Shearer scored as many as five goals on that occasion.
That win only narrowly beat a much more recent 7-0 win over Morecambe in the League Cup in 2020, with familiar faces Joelinton, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron among those on target.
Going further back, the Magpies thrashed Everton 8-2 in a First Division clash in 1959, and interestingly, there was a Premier League hammering of Tottenham in 1996, with Newcastle winning 7-1. Les Ferdinand scored twice on that occasion, with Shearer also on target.

There was also a 7-1 win over Leicester City in the First Division in 1993, with Andy Cole scoring a hat-trick St James’ Park, and Newcastle also defeated Burnley 7-1 in the First Division in 1951.
Fans will have much better memories of the 6-0 win over Preston in the League Cup in 2016, witAleksandr Mitrovic scoring a couple, and indeed of the Championship win over QPR by the same score-line in the same year. Jonjo Shelvey scored twice at Loftus Road to help secure that comfortable win.
Also securing spots inside the top 15 wins for Newcastle are the 6-0 win over Aston Villa in 2010 - in the Premier League - and a 1993 win over Barnsley by the same score-line in the First Division.
The Magpies also won 6-0 against Southport in the League Cup in 1975, and also against Doncaster Rovers in the same competition two years earlier.
