The official Premier League X channel faced embarrassment online after one of the league's tweets was hit with a community note for inaccuracy involving a post about Newcastle United over the weekend.

Endeavouring to keep top-flight followers engaged over a weekend without matches as the international break continues, the Premier League shared some statistics from the season so far in a graphic on the social media app, formerly known as Twitter.

The channel posted an image of teams with the most goals scored in the last five matches with Newcastle United supposedly top having hit the back of the net 13 times. In-form Magpies striker Alexander Isak adorned the graphic with the caption, 'the goals are flying in for the Magpies'.

The post actually did Newcastle United injustice with Eddie Howe's side firing in 14 goals in the last five fixtures but the whole list was littered with mistakes. In stepped Elon Musk's new fact-checking service Community Notes, which operates to avoid 'fake news' and highlighting misinformation.

Underneath the now-deleted tweet, a 'readers added context' tab appeared which read: "There are a number of inaccuracies in this tweet. Newcastle have scored 14 goals, Liverpool & Brighton have scored 12, Arsenal have scored 11 in their last five matches. The list is titled 'most goals scored' so Tottenham (12) and Man City (11) should also be included."

The Premier League were quick to delete the tweet but 1.6 million people had already seen the graphic, many picking up on the attached community note. One X user wrote: "Getting community noted on stats about your own league is crazy."

Another added: "Community notes on the Premier League official page about Premier League info is bonkers."

One follower joked that 'community notes [is] cooking the Premier League admin' and another labelled the new X function as 'the gift that keeps on giving'.

Newcastle United have been prolific in front of goal in recent weeks and are unbeaten in their last seven matches across all competitions. Their healthy Premier League goal tally is in no small part helped by the 8-0 thrashing dealt to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane last month when eight different Magpies players found their way onto the scoresheet on that historic Sunday afternoon.
