Premier League rivals backed to beat Newcastle United to sign £54 million playmaker

Newcastle’s rivals have been tipped to beat them to this signature.

Newcastle United stunned Arsenal to kick off the Premier League football for the weekend. A hard-fought 1-0 win dealt the Gunners a huge blow away from home, putting them at risk of a significant drop down the table. The Magpies ended their winless streak in superb fashion, while also piling the pressure on Mikel Arteta and his side.

Newcastle came under some criticism from fans over the summer who felt their transfer business was lacking in some areas. They had been linked with some big names tipped to transfer their side, including the highly sought-after Marc Guehi, who has remained with Crystal Palace after failed signing attempts.

Newcastle had three bids rejected by their Premier League rivals and while they remain keen on trying again to sign him, Football Insider reported last month that he ‘believes he can do better’ than the Magpies. Guehi is said to be keen on a move to a top-four club, with Liverpool in particular piquing his interest.

The Reds have also shown interest in the centre-back but whether they approach him in 2025 remains to be seen. Liverpool aren’t the only club who have been named as a preferred club for a Newcastle target either. According to CaughtOffside, Howe’s side and Aston Villa are ‘both keen on the potential transfer’ of Spanish winger Álex Baena, who is currently under contract with Villarreal until 2028.

The 23-year-old has been turning heads after his solid 2023/24 season, which saw him contribute five goals and 18 assists in all competitions. Baena has reportedly been valued at €65 million (£54m), which is a handsome asking price.

Newcastle have been looking to recruit a winger for a while now to bolster their attack but former Villa scout Bryan King believes Unai Emery will have the edge over their rivals, as he and Baena have previously worked together at Villarreal.

“Villa will have an advantage in this transfer race. Emery knows the player and the player knows him. I’m sure that will be the deciding factor. I’d say that Villa are in the driving seat when it comes to that deal. I think being in the UEFA Champions League helps as well,” King told Villa News.

Newcastle currently have five recognised wingers on their roster but Miguel Almirón has not been getting as much game time and Gordon remains a target among other clubs. The 23-year-old set up Alexander Isak’s goal against Arsenal on Saturday with a superb ball but his impressive performances are only adding to rivals’ interest in him.
