Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has already given an indication on where his future could lie amid reported interest from Newcastle United and Everton.

The former Leeds United star’s future is said to be back on the agenda for City manager Pep Guardiola as he continues to struggle to make an impact with the treble winners.

Since moving to the Etihad Stadium in a reported £42m deal last summer, Phillips has gone on to make just five starts for City, with the latest coming in their recent Carabao Cup defeat at Newcastle. After an underwhelming display at St James Park, the 27-year-old appeared for the final 25 minutes of City’s 2-1 defeat at Wolves just days later before remaining as an unused substitute for Sunday’s loss at title rivals Arsenal.

A recent report from iNews has claimed the reigning Premier League champions are ‘increasingly likely’ to allow Phillips to leave during the January transfer window and have claimed a loan move is the ‘most likely outcome’.

Phillips has already discussed his difficulties at City after he rejected several offers during the summer transfer window and revealed he would consider leaving if he found himself out of Guardiola’s side on a regular basis.

Speaking during the summer, he said: “My intention is to stay. We have just won the treble, so there is no reason for me to leave, other than if I am not playing, I will obviously have to think about it. I cannot give it 12 months and say: ‘I am not playing so I am going to leave.’ As you have seen with many players at City, it can take quite a while to cement yourself into the team.”

He added: “I spoke to quite a few of the players about it [lack of game-time]. Nathan Aké being one; Jack [Grealish]. They all said the same: the first 12 months were the hardest of their City careers but after that it … it doesn’t become easy, but easier. I’m just going to go away for the off-season and enjoy myself with my family and girlfriend and friends and then come back fighting.”

Phillips could feature alongside Newcastle star Kieran Trippier when England return to action with a friendly against Australia at Wembley on Friday night before Italy visit the home of football for a Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday.
