Newcastle United’s spectacular run to secure a top four finish was one of the most talked about topics of the 2022/23 Premier League season. For the first time in 20 years, the Magpies are set to return to the Champions League and host European nights at St James’ Park once again.

But Eddie Howe and his side’s success wasn’t the only hot discussion point of the campaign. Since it was introduced, VAR has taken the spotlight and divided both fans and professionals when it comes to whether it is truly effective in football.

This season was no different and there were plenty of moments where VAR intervened and made match-changing decisions, which means without it, the Premier League table would look very different. Fortunately for Newcastle, they had no serious decisions given to or against them, meaning their fourth-place finish would still stand.

Manchester United would also remain in third with no point chances, but the same can’t be said for Liverpool. The Reds would see a hefty seven-point drop based on VAR decisions awarded and they would slip into sixth place behind Brighton.

Further down the table, West Ham would shoot up to 11th from 14th with a tidy seven points added to their tally. And down in the bottom three, despite both Leeds and Leicester gaining points, their relegation fate remains the same. Take a look at the full table and how it would stand without VAR.
