Ruben Amorim repeatedly called Newcastle United a better team than Manchester United during his bombshell post-match interview.

Amorim watched on as his Red Devils side lost 2-0 to Newcastle following goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton inside the opening 20 minutes. It was only the third time since 1972 that the Magpies have won at Old Trafford.

Eddie Howe’s side are now 10 points above Man United with a run of four straight league wins seeing them climb to fifth in the top-flight table.

Speaking after the game, Amorim said: “It was really hard on us. They are a better team and they started very strong. When we suffer a goal like we suffered in the other games it is really hard at this moment to turn around.

“First of all because of all the losses that we’ve had before and also because we don’t have the work behind the way we play to cope with the difficult moments. The players suffered a lot on the pitch and it was really hard on us. Like I said, Newcastle is a better team.”

Amorim hooked Joshua Zirkzee in the 32nd minute and introduced Kobbie Mainoo as Newcastle threatened to run riot. It was a move that helped nullify the visitors, however by that point, the damage was already done.

Sitting seven points above the bottom three, Amorim admitted Man United are in a relegation battle.

“Yes, that is really clear and we have to fight,” the former Sporting Lisbon man said. “It is a really difficult moment in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty. We have to fight.”

The 39-year-old has won just two of his opening eight matches in charge. The 20-time champions of England are currently on a three-game losing streak ahead of facing Liverpool this weekend.
