A highly-rated defender linked with Newcastle United is joining another Premier League club.

Reports in Italy have previously claimed Newcastle were among several clubs across Europe interested in Juventus centre-back Dean Huijsen.

But the Magpies haven’t followed up their apparent interest and are set to come face-to-face with the Netherlands born player this season.

As widely reported, Huijsen has turned down moves to Bundesliga clubs Stuttgart and Wolfsburg in favour of joining AFC Bournemouth, who host Newcastle on the second weekend of the new Premier League season.

The 19-year-old was on the books at Costa United and Malaga having moved to Spain at the age of five. He joined Juventus in 2021 before making his senior debut two years later in a 1-0 win away to AC Milan.

Last season, Huijsen was loaned out to Roma and made 14 Serie A appearances, scoring two goals.

Huijsen will undergo his Bournemouth medical on Saturday ahead of signing a long-term contract. The transfer fee is said to be £15million in total, including add-ons.

Tiago Pinto, Bournemouth’s new president of football operations, is understood to have played a key role in Huijsen’s decision having previously signed him for Roma.

Newcastle remain in the market for a new central defender with both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman sidelined with long-term knee injuries.

Eddie Howe has brought in Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth while latest reports suggest United are showing strong interest in AC Milan’s £35m-rated centre-back Malick Thiaw.
