Newcastle United star Harvey Barnes has promised to ‘take tips’ from a Magpies supporter who went viral with his reaction to the winger’s late goal on Saturday.

The £38 million man, who arrived on Tyneside from Leicester City this summer, started the meeting with Aston Villa on the bench but was given his competitive Newcastle United debut by Eddie Howe in the second half.

It was a day to remember for the 25-year-old too as he burst through on goal following a clever Jacob Murphy pass and slotted home his side’s fifth goal in extra time.

The beaming winger then ran over to the corner flag and set about performing his trademark bow-and-arrow celebration in front of the St James’ Park faithful. Captures on the Sky Sports cameras, as Barnes executed the move, one characterful and topless Magpies fan copied the star with a lovestruck grin.

Capturing the attention of viewers at home, the clip soon went viral online with football fans falling in love with the fan’s finesse. Twitter users labelled the moment ‘brilliant’, ‘beautiful’ and ‘perfect’. One viewer said: “He did it better than Barnes!”

Another added: “Watched this like 20 times, makes me smile every time. Look at his face! Pure joy.”

The supporter’s performance didn’t escape the attention of Barnes either, with the Newcastle United star posting the clip on Instagram and complimenting the fan’s “10/10 technique”. The forward added: “Definitely taking tips.”

Speaking after the game, Barnes told BBC Radio Newcastle: “It’s been a good start. I am loving it at the minute. I think that showed when I came on. I am excited to be here and when you come off the bench you want to make a positive impact.

“It’s impressive. Villa are a good team. We faced them in pre-season so knew a bit of how they play. They’ll be a good team this year so to lay down that performance and result is impressive. First game, you want to get a good result and set the tone, I think we’ve done that.

“I think I have settled in really well. I missed some training with Leicester so I felt I was playing catch up a bit when I first came. But I feel like I have been here a lot longer than I have actually, like I have settled in with the group, who are a great bunch of lads. On the pitch as well I think that shows. I feel I have adapted to the style well and hopefully that can continue for the season.”

Barnes will no doubt be hoping to break into the starting XI over the weeks to come, but Magpies boss Eddie Howe did emphasise the importance of substitutes after the win against Aston Villa.

Howe said: “My intention always when winning is not to sit back. I don’t believe that is the right way to defend.

“But sometimes I could have made those substitutions and not had that effect. You can never tell how the game is going to unfold. But certainly today, those substitutes made our performance better in that moment, their energy, their enthusiasm and their pace gave Villa problems as their back line got high.”
