Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe refused to criticise his ‘big name’ players following the 3-1 defeat at Fulham on Saturday.

The Magpies suffered their first defeat of the new Premier League season and while their overall performance fell below expectation, individuals error contributed massively to the result.

After Raul Jimenez opened the scoring five minutes in, goalkeeper Nick Pope gifted the hosts a second when he failed to gather a tame effort from Emile Smith Rowe.

Howe introduced Jacob Murphy and Lewis Hall at half-time, whom he dropped for Joe Willock and Lloyd Kelly, and that sparked an immediate response with Murphy setting up Harvey Barnes for 2-1.

United were then left in disbelief when goalkeeper Bernd Leno passed the ball straight to Fabian Schar. However, from eight yards out, the former Switzerland international struck the side-netting.

A disappointing afternoon was then compounded when substitute Reiss Nelson picked up Bruno Guimaraes’ aimless pass to fire past Pope in stoppage time.

Guimaraes gestured an apology to the away end at full-time. Asked about the Brazilian’s reaction, Howe said: “I didn't see that but we all take accountability. There's no one individual we're looking at, we lose together and it's a painful one for us all to take.”

Key players such as Schar, Joelinton, Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak notably struggled but Howe said: “We have to judge it individually. I don’t think you can make a group judgement on that.

“Some of the lads, and I know you’re probably bored of me saying it, have had very difficult and disjointed summers and they haven’t had the six week pre-season we would have wanted them to, and the performances reflect that.

“But we need them up to speed as quickly as possible because they can make the difference. I don’t think it’s going to be solved in a few days but it is something the players need to take ownership of as well, and we’ll work with them to find their best form.”

Howe’s side are back in action on Tuesday when they visit AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
