Arsenal have suffered another injury blow ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg tie against Newcastle United in three weeks’ time.

Gabriel Jesus was stretchered off during the Gunners’ FA Cup third round penalty shootout exit against Manchester United on Sunday. Mikel Arteta confirmed after the game that the Brazilian had suffered a knee injury.

“Big worry, that’s my feeling,” said Arteta. “He had to come off on a stretcher, with a lot of pain, touching his knee. It’s not looking good. I think it is the other one [and not the knee he injured at the 2022 World Cup].

“But the worrying factor is more the feeling that he had, when he had to come off, and the pain that he was in.”

Arteta’s side are already without Bukayo Saka because of a hamstring injury, while Ethan Nwaneri is sidelined for the next few weeks with a muscle problem.

Newcastle were without Alexander Isak for their FA Cup victory over League Two side Bromley, but the Swede is expected to return for this week’s Premier League double-header against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday and AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Sweden international complained about tightness in his hamstring during the Magpies’ 2-0 win at the Emirates in midweek so wasn’t risked.

“We think he is pretty good,” Howe said on Friday. “He’s seeing his physio at the moment, giving him a couple of days rest but we think he is in a good place. He’ll report back tomorrow [Saturday] and we’ll have a good look at him.

“We would have probably involved him in the game [v Bromley] in some way but I think with what has happened, he’ll probably be given this game to rest and get himself right for the future schedule we have.”
