The Rugby League World Cup gets underway in Newcastle on Saturday with a spectacular opening ceremony set to take place at St. James' Park, before events move out of the city centre and to Kingston Park.

The multi-purpose stadium on the outskirts of Newcastle will host three matches over the next two weeks with teams from across the globe playing at the ground.

Where St. James' Park is well-known for being the home of Newcastle United, and not exactly hard to find as it towers over Tyneside, Kingston Park may be a little less heard of. NewcastleWorld walks through all you need to know about the stadium.

Kingston Park is home to Premiership Rugby union side Newcastle Falcons and Betfred Championship rugby league side Newcastle Thunder. The Newcastle United Women also play many of their football matches at the ground.

In the coming weeks, Kingston Park will be home to three Rugby League World Cup matches. The first is Scotland vs Italy on October 16, followed by Fiji vs Italy on October 22 and Fiji vs Scotland on October 29.

Any rugby fans staying in the Newcastle city centre and going to this weekend's match at St. James' Park will be able to just enjoy a short stroll to the ground. A bit more planning will have to go into getting to Kingston Park.

Luckily, the stadium is on the Metro line, which is how the vast majority of supporters will arrive. Parking around the stadium is limited.

The Newcastle Falcons site states: "We are only five miles from Newcastle city centre, three miles from Newcastle International Airport, two minutes drive from the A1 and a five-minute walk from Kingston Park and Bank Foot Metro stations."

Where are the best pubs near Kingston Park?

Rugby fans wanting to enjoy a beer before or after fixtures at Kingston Park can do so in the immediate area outside the ground, rather than heading all the way back to the Newcastle city centre.

The Twin Farms and Windsor Public House are both about a 10-minute walk from the ground. The former scores four stars on Google and the latter four and a half, so are both popular choices.

The Northumbrian Piper is a bit further out at 23 minutes walk from the stadium, and in the wrong direction from the Metro. However, it's another popular option if others are too busy.
