NE1's big outdoor Screen on the Green will return to the Newcastle city centre this summer.

A bumper programme of sports and movies will be shown on the mammoth screen that will take residence in the heart of Old Eldon Square from Monday, June 27.

Live action for the public to catch will start with tennis from Wimbledon, racing from the British Grand Prix and football action from the Women's European Championships.

The sporting screenings will culminate with the Tour de France.

Family-friendly movies will then be screened at the site for free during the school holidays.

Exactly what those movies are is yet to be revealed, with organisers teasing that Geordies should keep an eye out for an announcement nearer opening on Monday.

The screen has popped up in Newcastle every summer since 2016 with deckchairs, bean bags and other outdoor seating available to the public.

Ben Whitfield, Director of Communications at NE1 said: “We are delighted to be launching Screen on the Green with an exciting programme of sporting fixtures for people to enjoy, for free, in the heart of the city before the summer movie schedule gets underway in the school holidays.

"We can’t wait to get behind England’s Lionesses as they battle it out to, hopefully, win the Championships and we can’t wait to watch the stars play at Wimbledon, with the British Grand Prix and Tour De France both also set to be broadcast on the big screen.

“Screen on the Green is a much-loved part of NE1’s Summer in the City activity programme and is a favourite with families and people of all ages. We love animating the city with fun, free activities during the summer holidays, giving people more reasons to plan their visit to the city centre and to stay longer when they are here, enjoying all that the city has to offer. Let’s hope the sun stays out!”
