The Gate Newcastle has confirmed the earliest possible opening date as its closure drags on.

The city centre hotspot was forced to evacuate and close suddenly on Thursday, May 5.

Businesses inside The Gate have been unable to trade since then with the safety risks leading to the closure proving serious.

On Monday night, 11 days after closing, The Gate confirmed that it would remain shut for another four weeks at least.

That means that the centre's earliest possible opening date will be Monday, June 13.

A statement shared on Twitter read: "The health and safety of all those who visit and work in, and around, our places is utmost priority.

"As a result, we will be carrying out an upgrade to some of the fire systems and measures at The Gate to ensure we operate at the highest safety standard.

"Whilst these works are carried out, The Gate will remain closed for at least 4 weeks.

"We would like to offer our sincere apologies for the ongoing disruption, and will provide updates on progress."

A member of door staff working at a nearby venue told NewcastleWorld that the issue had to do with the sprinkler system in the building.

The Gate has been owned by The Crown Estate since 2012.

Shortly after the closure, The Crown Estate now clarified the situation saying that the centre remains closed "to enable the team to carry out further testing of the internal mechanisms that prevent the spread of a fire, to ensure these mechanisms meet the highest standard of fire safety".

In social media posts, businesses inside The Gate have shared a keenness to re-open but can only do so when given the green light by The Gate.

The extended closure is particularly bad news for the Cineworld inside The Gate, which has already missed ticket revenue from Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The cinema will now also miss the opening days and weeks of upcoming blockbusters Top Gun Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion.

The Gate car park is also closed.

The Hustle, The Lofts and The Mayfair remain open.
