Great North Run weekend road closures: The full list of closed roads across Newcastle, Gateshead and South Tyneside

The race is a matter of days away and these are the routes to avoid for drivers.

The Great North Run is now just days away and while runners are getting towards their final weeks of training, councils’ preparation is nearly complete with the full list of road closures throughout Newcastle, Gateshead and South Tyneside planned.

The Great North Run this year is on Sunday, September 11 although some closures may occur on Saturday, September 10.

Newcastle

Road closures across the city will be undertaken in three parts in order to ensure minimal disruption.

Part one of the operation will be active from Saturday, September 10 at 8pm and 6pm on Sunday, September 11. It includes:

The North West Radial, which is also known as Jedburgh Road or A167 and associated slip roads between Grandstand Road and the Great North Road

North Terrace between Claremont Road and Town Moor

Part two of the process is operational from 6:45am until 11am on Sunday, September 11 and includes:

Central Motorway East (A167) and associated slip roads between Great North Road and Tyne Bridge

Claremont Road between Grandstand Road and Queen Victoria Road

Hunters Road between Sheraton Street and Claremont Road

Part three is the shortest of the three sections, and is in place between 10am and 11am on Sunday, September 11. This covers:

Jesmond Dene Road at its junction with Great North Road

Great North Road Northbound at its junction with Grandstand Road

Great North Road Southbound at its junction with Grandstand Road

In addition to these closures, temporary waiting restrictions will be in place from 7am until 11am on Sunday, September 11 on Ponteland Road. This will run from the access road to Wingrove House rear car park to its eastern junction with the A167.

Gateshead and South Tyneside

Much like the system set up in Newcastle, road closures across the weekend will take place in a series of sections.

Part one of the closure system is over two roads, the A167 Central motorway and the Cowgate roundabout and Grandstand Road interchange up to the Great North Road (B1318) Interchange. These will be closed from 8pm on Saturday, September 10 until 6:20pm on Sunday, September 11.

Part two will be in place between 8:45 and 5pm on race day and includes the A167(M) Central motorway including the Tyne Bridge and Great North Road Interchange (B1318) to Park Lane (A184) which is part of the race route.

The next section of the closure system lasts between 8:45am and 5pm on Sunday. This covers the A184 Park lane and Felling Bypass to Whitemare Pool Interchange while part four sees the A194(M) Whitemare Pool Interchange with Leam Lane up to John Reid Rd roundabout (A1300) closed between 9:45am and 4pm.

The fifth closure includes John Reid Road (A1300), Prince Edward Road (A1300) and the Redwell Lane and Coast Road roundabout which is closed from 9:45am until 4pm.

The next set of closures follow the Coast Road from Redwell Lane to Mowbray Road which is closed from 8am until 5:30pm and Bents Park Road including Sea Way to Mowbray Road between 2:45am and 5:30pm.

The final closure is on the northbound route along Coast Road from Marsden Rock to Redwell Lane between 2pm and 5:30pm.
