Two suspected burglars charged after Jarrow crime spree

Two suspected burglars who went on an overnight crime spree in Jarrow have been charged by police.

Officers were made aware of suspicious activity taking place at three Jarrow properties in the early hours of Saturday, June 25.

At around 1:30 am, it was reported that an occupant had found the front bedroom of their home on Pine Avenue in a state of disarray - several items were reported as missing including a mobile phone, bank card and a wooden drawer containing various items of jewellery and watches.

Shortly after 3 am, it was reported that intruders had gained entry to a different property on Gloucester Way.

When confronted by the occupants, the suspects fled the scene on foot - a number of items were reported missing including jewellery of sentimental value.

Then, shortly before 6 am, it was reported that a suspect had gained entry to a property on The Crescent, taking car keys and driving off in a Nissan Juke that was parked outside on the drive. Other items missing included electronics of high value.

Officers immediately launched an investigation and started to carry out enquiries to locate those believed to be involved. Two men – aged 32 and 40 – were subsequently arrested in connection with the incidents.

Shortly after the first report came in, officers carrying out joint patrol activity spotted two males walking on the hard shoulder westbound on the A19 and located a Nissan Juke nearby.

The men were taken into custody and later charged with offences including burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. The 32-year-old man was remanded and the 40-year-old man was bailed ahead of their next appearance at Newcastle Crown Court later this month.

Detective Inspector Ed Hollingsworth, of Northumbria Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, said: “This was a fantastic response with officers acting swiftly on the concerns of the community.

“Thanks to some brilliant teamwork between both Northumbria and Durham, where we were able to share intelligence and quickly locate two suspects.

“As a result of these collaborative efforts, we interviewed two men in custody, and they have since been charged in connection with the three incidents that spanned over just a short few hours.

“We would always encourage anybody who sees anything they believe to be suspicious to get in touch as soon as possible. That way, we can continue to work together to ensure our region remains as safe as it possibly can be.

“We will continue to work closely with the public, businesses and partners to ensure any burglars and thieves are identified, arrested and brought to justice.”
