Newcastle headed into the match against Villa looking to bounce back from Monday night’s 4-1 hammering at Coventry City, but fell short as Johan Manzambi’s 36th-minute header inflicted a second consecutive Premier League defeat.

The Magpies managed just one shot on target over the 90 minutes, while also extending their run without a clean sheet at St James’ Park to a club-record 16 games.

Shearer watched on from the directors’ box before taking to social media after the game. The club’s record goalscorer stopped short of swearing, instead choosing to share the “polite version” of his reaction.

“The polite version is ………… That was very poor,” Shearer wrote on X. “Well done Villa, comfortable winners. #NEWAVL.”

Matthias Jaissle’s side lost just one of their opening five Premier League matches but have lost both games since returning from the international break.

"It was in fact a game where we were dominating, overseeing a team giving a response, we made many situations where you saw we were about to win that game until we conceded the goal,” Jaissle said. "We need to be honest - we were shaking a bit until half-time but we showed again a good response.

“Second 45 minutes, really aggressive from our lads. We won the duels, unfortunately we were not smart enough in the final decision-making in the opposition box so that is something we need to work on.

“We need to threaten the opposition much more when we have the ball in the final third. We had the occasions but in the end, the lucky punch was missing."
