Botman was subject to a VAR check in the 18th minute after lunging into a tackle on the Senegalese international but fortunately escaped with a yellow card.

A statement from the Premier League Match Centre confirmed: “#NEWAVL – 17’ The referee’s call of yellow card to Botman for the challenge on Jackson was checked and confirmed by VAR.

“REF: “I think it's reckless. Even though you get a touch on the ball, it's still reckless”.

On the incident, Jackson said: "I'm good. I know the referee said yellow card but it was so high and hopefully maybe next time a red card, but it was a yellow.

“I nearly broke my leg but anyway it's part of football. The most important thing is we win and we won so I'm OK and he [Manzambi] is OK."

Villa went to take the lead later in the first half through Johan Manzambi, and that proved to be the winner as Matthias Jaissle’s side suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats after Monday’s 4-1 loss at Coventry City.

The Magpies have now gone 16 league matches at St James’ Park without keeping a clean sheet.

"It was a difficult game,” Jackson added. “We know St James' Park is very difficult to play but we got three points and we're very happy to win here."
