Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has reacted to Lewis Miley's record-breaking goal v Fulham.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has reacted as Lewis Miley became the club's youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer against Fulham.

Eddie Howe's side won 3-0 at St James' Park to end a run of three straight defeats, and it was 17-year-old Miley who broke the deadlock in the 57th minute.

Miley had only just been born when Shearer retired in 2006 but the 53-year-old knows just has it feels to score in front of the Gallowgate End.

Shearer posted on X: "Ah man what a feeling for Lewis Miley #NEWFUL"

The midfielder netted his first senior goal in just his ninth appearance. He had started the last seven matches in a row before dropping to the bench against the Cottagers.

However, Miley was called into action midway through the first-half when Joelinton went off injured, and he responded emphatically by playing a star role in the win, which also came courtesy of goals from Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn.

“I'm delighted for him," Howe added. "With Lewie, I go back to the two most memorable moments, for me, at the start of his Newcastle career: one was the assist against Chelsea, where he's had the composure to find Alex and a really big goal for us at the time; and then the assist in the Champions League for Joelinton in midweek, where again he's made another incredible decision.

"But today was his moment, put in by Bruno's brilliant run and did he have the composure in front of the Gallowgate to score a massive goal in our season, and he did and I'm delighted for him. We tried to manage his minutes today and give him a little rest, but it didn't turn out that way.

“The way that on the pitch, he's emotionless – and I mean that as the biggest compliment I can. In a difficult moment, he's not beating himself up, he's not frustrated, he's just very calm and in a positive moment like scoring the goal today, he doesn't let that go to his head and negatively affect his performance.

"He just carries on doing the right thing most of the time, and that's the hallmark of a great player in my eyes."
