Eddie Howe admits the only negative from Newcastle United's 3-0 win over Fulham was the loss of Fabian Schar and Joelinton to injury.

After losing three games on the bounce to Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan, Eddie Howe's side returned to winning ways in the Premier League via second-half goals from Lewis Miley, Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn.

United recorded a seventh straight league win at St James' Park and moved up sixth in the top-flight table as they avoided a Champions League hangover having been knocked out of the competition on Wednesday.

"Midweek was a difficult experience for us," Howe told NewcastleWorld. "I wasn't disappointed with the performance but more just the outcome and what had happened and how it happened was difficult.

"The players are human beings, they're not robots. In this city, you cannot get away from the highs and lows that follow you. They did incredibly well to hold their nerve today.

"It was a really tricky game for us but hopefully that should give us the confidence now for the games we have coming up because they don't get any easier or any smaller, they're all big games to keep our season going positively.

Newcastle head to Chelsea on Tuesday in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, and they could be without Schar and Joelinton, who were forced off in the first half at St James' Park.

Howe confirmed Schar has a glute issue while Joelinton departed with a hamstring injury but is hopeful they won't be ruled out for long.

“Obviously that is the negative [from today]," said Howe. "We don’t think they’re serious but certainly, to come off the pitch they’re short-term problems for us that we can’t navigate easily at the moment.

"We were thinking possibly we’re through the worst of our injury situation now it’s sort of rearing its head again in a negative way. Let’s just see where we are tomorrow.”
