Eddie Howe reflected on a historic night for Newcastle United as they beat French champions Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 at St James’ Park.

On the Magpies’ first Champions League home night for 20 years, Howe’s side matched, and perhaps bettered, previous wins in this exact competition against Barcelona in 1997 and Juventus in 2002.

United took the lead in the 17th minute when Miguel Almiron opened the scoring. Dan Burn then made it 2-0 just before the break before another Geordie in the form of Sean Longstaff added a third in the 50th minute.

PSG pulled one back through Lucas Hernandez six minutes later but the Newcastle defence stayed composed with centre-back Fabian Schar capping off a memorable night in stunning fashion after beating Gianluigi Donnarumma from 25 yards.

“Amazing evening for us, so many stories to talk about within the game,” said Howe. “I am delighted for the club and the supporters what they gave us tonight was incredible.

“They [PSG] are such a good team we had to defend really well and our spirit was brilliant. We created the positive things in the first-half and the aggressive pressing which is a haul mark of ours.

“I’m so, so pleased with the players for what they’ve gave tonight and what they’ve given me. That was just a really good night for them and for us.

“It was such a good feeling for the whole football club. The supporters were so united for us. I’m very pleased.

“It was a difficult game tactically. It was two very good teams going up against each other. We had to try and unbalance them and make it difficult for them to build from the back. I thought the crowd helped us do that.

“We were man to man at the back against elite players but for me, that’s our best way, especially here, to be successful. The players deserve credit for how they performed today.”

“We hoped we could implement what we wanted to do. I thought it was an even game. They had some moments when they hurt us and we had some moments where we hurt them. We scored our goals at good times. Delighted with the players that scored for their own individual recognition.

“But to score four games, it wasn’t necessarily expected to do but I’m delighted we were amazing to do that. I think it’s a really special night.”
