WATCH: Bruno Guimaraes Arsenal penalty woe - Newcastle United supporters will love this

Bruno Guimaraes missed a crucial penalty as Arsenal suffered a shock Carabao Cup last-16 defeat at Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night.

Newcastle United Carabao Cup-winning captain Bruno Guimaraes won’t be lifting the trophy with Arsenal this year after Tuesday night’s penalty shootout defeat to Fleetwood Town.

An eventful match at Fleetwood saw the League Two side take the lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi before Viktor Gyokeres equalised in the second half. Bruno Guimaraes was a late substitute in the game as Max Dowman was sent off in the closing stages of the match at Highbury.

With no extra-time at this stage of the competition, the tie went straight to penalties after 90 minutes. In the shootout, Guimaraes saw his penalty saved by Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch.

It was the only unsuccessful penalty from either side and was enough to see Fleetwood progress to the quarter-final.

It also marked the first time Guimaraes has failed to reach the latter stages of the competition having won the Carabao Cup with Newcastle while also reaching the final, semi-final and quarter-final in different seasons.

But perhaps a bigger concern to the Brazilian is his alarming recent record from the penalty spot.

Bruno Guimaraes penalty problems

Tuesday night’s penalty miss made it three penalty misses for Guimaraes from his last four spot kicks for club and country.

Tuesday’s penalty at Fleetwood was Guimaraes’ first since his high-profile penalty miss in the World Cup last-16 defeat to Norway in the summer. And has once again played a decisive role in denying his side a quarter-final spot.

He also missed in Newcastle’s FA Cup shootout win over AFC Bournemouth back in January before converting from the spot a few weeks later in the Premier League defeat to Brentford.

Maybe now he’ll think twice before deploying that stuttered run-up and telegraphed side-footed technique.

Now Newcastle will be hoping to avoid being knocked out before the quarter-final stage themselves as they face Everton on Thursday night.
