Eddie Howe believes Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall “did themselves proud” on their return to Chelsea.

Livramento and Hall lined up as Newcastle United’s full-backs at Stamford Bridge. Livramento left in 2021 for Southampton while Hall completed a permanent switch to the Magpies in the summer for an initial £28million after spending last season on loan.

Both players played a prominent role in Alexander Isak’s equaliser. Livramento did really well to carry the ball forward before Hall provided the cross that Isak tapped home.

But United ultimately came away with nothing. A precise ball by Cole Palmer saw Pedro Neto get in behind Livramento to set up Nicolas Jackson for the opener. Palmer then put his side back ahead shortly after half-time when he beat Nick Pope from distance after Alexander Isak lost possession.

Nevertheless, Howe was pleased with the young duo’s performance. He said: “Two outstanding players and a big day for them coming back to their former club. I think they did themselves proud in and out of possession.

“The full backs are such a big part of what we do and how we attack and they've done really well up against some very good opponents. I was happy with both of their performances.”

Livramento and Hall are set to stay in the starting XI for the Blues’ visit to St James’ Park in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
