Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to West Ham United on Sunday, a result that leaves them 14th in the Premier League table having claimed 11 points from their opening nine matches.

The Dutchman was told on Monday he was being relieved of his duties just over two years in charge. Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, assistant to Ten Hag, will take charge on an interim basis.

A club statement read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.

Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”

Manchester United beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final in Ten Hag’s first season in charge before inflicting more misery on the Magpies in May by winning the FA Cup. The win against Manchester City at Wembley denied Eddie Howe’s side a European place after finishing seventh.

Ten Hag was rewarded with a new contract in the summer but Red Devils chiefs, including chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox, have performed a quick U-turn by sacking the 54-year-old.

Newcastle are one point above Man United in the Premier League table. The latter will likely have a new manager in place when Howe’s men visit Old Trafford on December 30.
