Newcastle United hope to secure the signing of Lille and Canada forward Jonathan David this summer.

Newcastle United have earmarked Jonathan David as the man to replace Callum Wilson, should the England frontman be shown the St James’ Park exit door.

And NewcastleWorld understands, there is some confidence the Magpies can strike a deal to bring the Lille and Canada frontman to Tyneside.

Both David and Wilson are out of contract in the summer, and it is expected both, as things stand, will be allowed to depart their respective clubs.

It has been reported nationally that four Premier League clubs have made representations to the agent of David, as well as two from Serie A. Newcastle United believe they can beat any other rival to the player’s signature, despite David proving to be one of the most sought after free agents on the market.

Newcastle are in the market for a striker to help share the burden with Alexander Isak, who has largely had to plough a lone furrow in the Magpies’ frontline this season, with only youngster Will Osula, expected to start against Bromley in the FA Cup this weekend, as support.

David = goals

David turns 25 next week and has a remarkable goals record in Ligue 1.

During his four years at Lille, he’s netted 102 goals in only 173 starts, that includes 19 in 29 this season.

David broke through at Gent, where he enjoyed a similarly prolific spell, scoring 35 in just 58 starts.

Wilson issues - and return

Wilson has rarely been available for United this campaign, spending most of the season so far on the treatment table.

The 49-goal Newcastle frontman has made just four substitute appearances this season and is yet to score, which has meant Isak has been forced to play on without any support and carry the team’s goalscoring burden. Luckily, the Swede has done just that, netting 15 goals so far this season.

After a frustrating season, Wilson is edging closer to a Newcastle return.

Speaking at his pre-Bromley press conference, Eddie Howe said: “I don't think he is training with the first team yet but he is on the grass. He's making good progress, we've been really pleased.

“He could be coming back, if all goes to plan, around the beginning of February.”
