Veiga’s club Celta Vigo, who last week appoint Rafa Benitez as manager, are powerless to keep him if his £34million release is activated. However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, clubs want to negotiate below that amount.

The central midfielder scored 11 goals and registered four assists in 36 matches, including a brace against Barcelona on the final day of the La Liga season to help his side survive relegation.

Benitez revealed his hopes of keeping Veiga during his unveiling as Celta boss.

“We are talking about an important player, who comes from the academy, and I would be delighted to have him continue with us,” the former Newcastle manager said.

“It would be exciting for everyone, and I will try to improve him as much as possible if he continues with us. I like him a lot, he’s a great player and I’m counting on him.”

With suggestions that clubs want to negotiate below Veiga’s release, it is possible the player could stay at Estadio de Balaídos next season. Celta president Carlos Mourino previously hinted he would not allow his prize asset to depart for anything less.

“We do not want to sell him under any circumstances but they are going to buy him from us,” Mourino said. “We know some of the offers, we would not have the capacity to pay him what other teams do.

“Gabri has a Celtic feeling and will always have the doors open but he will depend exclusively on him and he is What they are offering him is irrefutable. He will decide where he wants to go but that club will have to pay the clause.”

Veiga is enjoying a short break before returning to Celta for pre-season.
