11 players missing as two return for Newcastle United vs Bristol City - here's why
Newcastle United travel to Bristol City tonight and several high-profile stars are expected to return.
Anthony Elanga is the only World Cup star set to feature for Newcastle United against Bristol City tonight.
Six Toon players - not including Anthony Gordon - represented their nations across the pond earlier this summer. All except Dan Burn and Bruno Guimaraes returned to pre-season training on Monday.
Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw and Yoane Wissa are fit but Howe has decided against throwing the trio into the deep end at Ashton Gate. Newcastle fans hoping to see more new arrivals in action will also be disappointed.
Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba have not travelled with the first-team squad for the trip down south. Likewise, Tino Livramento, Joelinton, Lewis Miley and Will Osula are working their way back to full fitness and will not play any part this evening.
On a positive note, Sean Steur - who impressed on debut against Gateshead at the weekend - is with the group. Ewen Jaouen replaced Nick Pope in the second half of the Heed clash and will get his chance between the sticks from the start.
Jacob Murphy fills in at right-back, with Fabian Schar, Sven Botman - who also returns tonight - and Lewis Hall completing the backline. In midfield, Steur will anchor the engine room, with Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock given licence to attack.
Elanga and Harvey Barnes - fresh from signing a new long-term contract - will support Sean Neave up front. The Winlaton native was eager to get on the scoresheet at the weekend and gets another opportunity to impress potential loan suitors.
Eddie Howe’s men are aiming to complete the first leg of their pre-season campaign with a win at Ashton Gate. Next week will see the Magpies jet to Spain to take on La Liga side Valencia - giving supporters a chance to top up their tans before the Premier League opener on August 23.
