Erling Haaland trolls Sunderland as Newcastle United open up four-point Premier League gap

Sunderland fought valiantly but ultimately could not stop Erling Haaland to close the gap on Newcastle United.

Erling Haaland appeared to encourage Sunderland fans to chant abuse at him following Manchester City’s 5-3 win on Sunday.

Enzo Maresca’s men opened up a three-point lead on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League but not without overcoming a tough fight on home soil. Man City went life and death with the Black Cats before their quality came through in the second half.

Brian Brobbey - a name Newcastle United fans would hope to forget - notched a hat-trick in vain as Sunderland left empty-handed. As for Haaland, he bagged his customary strike on 81 minutes - his seventh of the season in all competitions.

Sunderland taunt Erling Haaland

Sunderland fans tried to mock Haaland at the full-time whistle. The away end could be heard signing “You’re just a **** Brian Brobbey” - only for the Norwegian to play along.

Haaland was all smiles at the degrading chant as he applauded the home crowd. A close-range finish to seal all three points was his 117th in the Premier League since arriving in 2022.

The 26-year-old has also now scored against every top-flight club possible, having fired two blanks against Sunderland last season. If Haaland truly wants to get under the Black Cats’ skin, he could always consider a move to a certain team in black-and-white stripes…

Erling Haaland on watching Newcastle United

Haaland has openly admitted to supporting Leeds United and Man City - two sides his father played for - as a kid. However, he previously told Alan Shearer that there are lots of Newcastle fans in his hometown.

“Because in Norway, it’s the league (Premier League) we watch,” he told The Rest Is Football podcast. “Everyone in Norway has got a team.

“There’s so many Newcastle supporters, especially in my hometown, because it’s under one hour flight to Newcastle. It’s really close. You know, so it’s always been that there’s so many Leeds fans.”
