Tesco bizarrely mock Newcastle United on social media as supporters divided - here’s why

Newcastle United supporters have delivered a negative reaction to the club’s home shirt for the 2026-27 season.

Supermarket giant Tesco have weirdly poked fun at Newcastle United following the release of the 2026-27 home shirt.

Fan reaction to the upcoming kit - which went on sale last Wednesday - has been overwhelmingly negative. Adidas have ditched the traditional black-and-white stripes - opting for what is being described as a “barcode” look.

Newcastle are also yet to announce a front-of-shirt sponsor for the upcoming campaign. As a result, hype for the kit was low after going on sale five days ago.

The club hosted a special launch on Dean Street in the city centre - featuring DJs from across the region. However, this did little to boost the enthusiasm towards the controversial design.

Tesco mock Newcastle United shirt

Tesco have now joined in on the action by posting several humiliating photos on social media. On the supermarket’s official TikTok account, the retail behemoth posted several AI-generated images claiming to have released a new “Barcode United” kit.

This bore a striking resemblance to Newcastle’s new jersey - provoking hundreds of fans to respond. When asked if they were taking aim at the Magpies, the Tesco admin issued several sarcastic responses.

The saying “any publicity is good publicity” springs to mind. However, it is unlikely that Tesco’s jibe will see a flood of Newcastle fans head to the club shop to pay £85 for Adidas’ latest effort…

Newcastle United describe 2026-27 kit

“Our Adidas home kit for the 2026-27 season has arrived, introducing a fresh, new take on the black‑and‑white stripes,” Newcastle announced last Wednesday. “The full kit is available in‑store and online now.

“This season’s shirt reimagines our classic look with a bold, disrupted stripe pattern. An energetic pop of colour around the crew neck collar also adds a fresh take on tradition. On the back of the neck sits a magpie, a subtle nod to our heritage and home.

“A future-thinking and progressive jersey has been paired with more traditional clean black shorts and socks to complete this season’s look. Adidas has brought innovation to the jersey, with the authentic version featuring advanced Climacool+ technology. This is built to keep you cool, dry and comfortable, whether you’re playing five‑a‑side or roaring the lads and lasses on from the stands.”
