Former Sunderland striker Darren Bent has identified one Newcastle United star that has ‘a great chance’ of forcing his way into England’s Euro 2024 Finals squad.

The Magpies should be represented in Gareth Southgate’s final selection with right-back Kieran Trippier established as a firm favourite of the Three Lions manager. Callum Wilson will also hope to force his way back into contention when he returns from injury over the coming weeks. However, it seems highly unlikely goalkeeper Nick Pope will have any chance of returning to the squad as he focuses his attention on his recovery from the potentially season-ending shoulder injury he suffered in last month’s home win against Manchester United.

Magpies winger Anthony Gordon has been backed for a maiden call-up to the senior squad after helping England’s Under-21s to their European Championship Final win against Spain last summer. The former Everton star has continued to shine by scoring seven goals and providing eight assists in 30 appearances in all competitions during the first half of the season. Gordon was discussed by Southgate in November after he missed out on a place in the England squad for a Euro 2024 qualifying double header against Malta and North Macedonia.

Speaking at the time, Southgate said of Gordon: “He is a good player. He was very good with our under-21s last year. He is very close, I have to say. I like his attitude, I like the way he works so hard for the team. Of course, I am sure he was hoping for a call at this moment, but there are good players playing well in that position on the field. But I think, like a couple of others, they have always got to think a little bit further ahead as to opportunities that can come up.”

However, it is another Magpies star that Bent believes can break into the senior setup for the first time after the former England striker named Tino Livramento as a candidate to force his way into Southgate’s final squad.

The former Chelsea academy star was rewarded for showing patience as he waited for an opportunity to shine at St James Park after making a £32m switch to Tyneside in the aftermath of Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League.

Livramento, who also qualifies to play for Scotland and Portugal, has made 21 appearances in all competitions for Eddie Howe’s side and has been pressed into action on both sides of the Magpies defence during that time. Bent believes the young defender’s versatility and attacking ability could work in his favour as he looks for a first call-up to the senior squad.

He told talkSPORT: “I like him. I’ve put him at left-back but he can play right-back. He spent a bit of time at Southampton and I thought I like the look of this kid. I think he’s got a great chance, exciting, can go forwards can go past people, so he’s on at left-back.”
