The Magpies have already been in action this week, drawing 3-3 with Aston Villa on Monday in a six-goal thriller that saw Howe's side come back from going 2-0 down in the opening 12 minutes.

Next up is a meeting with Mauricio Pochettino's new-look Chelsea side. The former Spurs and PSG boss is overseeing a dramatic overhaul at the London club this summer with an exodus of departures as he trims the fat from a huge squad.

Eddie Howe said: "I'm really looking forward to the game. It's a great game for us. They're training on the pitch, I don't know how they managed to get one up on us there! Fair play to them.

"I think Chelsea will be strong this year, no doubt about that. They've got a top manager and they've got top players as well. They've gone very young in the teh transfer market but young with top players who will only get better from the experiences they get playing in the Premier League this year."

Newcastle United team news

Loris Karius looks set to start between the sticks for Newcastle United after Martin Dubravka completed 90 minutes against Aston Villa. Nick Pope is back in full training after a hand operation in May and could get the nod from Eddie Howe if ready.

New signing Harvey Barnes was only announced as a Newcastle United player on Sunday but featured off the bench against Aston Villa. A cameo seems likely for the former Leicester City man.

Joe Willock is also back in full training after a hamstring strain but the friendly against Chelsea may come a little early for the midfielder with Howe unlikely to risk the star if touch-and-go. Sean Longstaff has been training on his own after missing the Aston Villa game through injury and could also miss out.
