Newcastle United’s four-word response to Karl Darlow recall question ahead of Man United final

Eddie Howe was asked if Newcastle United could recall Karl Darlow for the Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe says Newcastle United are assessing their goalkeeping options after losing Nick Pope for the Carabao Cup final.

The Magpies goalkeeper, who has played all-but one game during the 2022-23 campaign, was red carded in the 22nd minute against Liverpool after a handball.

Pope will serve a one-match ban, which rules him out of the Wembley final versus Manchester United next Sunday.

Loris Karius is tipped to make his first competitive appearance for United, although Howe refused to rule out a potential recall for Mark Gillespie.

Howe was asked if there was a recall option on Karl Darlow’s loan move to Championship side Hull City but the 45-year-old said: “I don’t believe so.”

The United head coach revealed his disappointment for Pope, but backed both Karius, or Gillespie, ahead the club’s first final in 24 years.

“It’s harsh for Nick because he’s been magnificent for us and to miss the next game is a huge blow for him,” Howe said.

“We’ve got a decision to make. Mark Gillespie has trained very well this season as has Loris [Karius].”

He added: “Behind the scenes, these lads train every day and play games behind closed doors,” Howe said. I’ve got no doubt both are in great physical condition to play the game no injury concerns.

“We’re very hands-on and active with them during the sessions. We will mix and rotate who we use in certain moments, so they’ve all been part of our training all season.”
