On his return to the team, Joelinton netted the opener just a minute into the encounter. Yoane Wissa on his first Premier League start for the Magpies then netted the second before Josh Laurent got one back.

A nervy game was then signed and sealed in added time as Bruno Guimaraes pounced on a mistake by former keeper Martin Dubravka to lob in from distance. The three points was just their second on the road since the summer, coming after the 4-1 win at Everton last month.

The win was much needed - and sees Newcastle at least arrest any sense of decline, even if it was the bare minimum on the night. And this is what Eddie Howe had to say about it...

Eddie Howe quotes from Turf Moor to follow...

Yoane Wissa on his first NUFC Premier League goal

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wissa said: "We needed this win - especially away from home. I'm really pleased with the win tonight. Away from home there's been a lack of confidence, a lack of wins. Today we've just seen how hard it is. It's a top performance today, especially defensively.

"I think Burnley played a top game so give credit to them. We've shown the character and mentality to win.

"I'm really pleased with my goal. Now we have so many choices. I'm happy I've scored. Now we're looking forward to Crystal Palace (on Sunday)."

He said to the BBC: "It's a great feeling to score (his first Premier League goal of the season). We've had some good games away from home but we didn't win many of those.

"Today was really important to get the three points and finish the year with a win. It's been a great year and we wanted to finish with a win.

"We started the first half really well and then after the second goal we lost a little bit of control. But I think we could have had more goals. In the end I'm really happy with the three points because that's the most important thing."
