Sven Botman's Newcastle United substitution v Chelsea explained after double injury concern

Newcastle United have two fresh injury concerns heading into Saturday's Premier League clash away to Luton Town.

The Magpies were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea on penalties last night having conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to Mykhailo Mudryk.

And to compound their misery, United watched as Emil Krafth withdrew at half-time before Anthony Gordon hobbled off not long after.

Gordon picked up his injury in the opening stages as Moises Caicedo avoided a red card for dragging his studs down the back of the winger's calf. Krafth was also on the end of a contentious challenge from Levi Colwill.

Howe explained: “Emil was too sore to continue. He’s got a nasty gash on his shin, which is quite sore at the moment.

“Anthony is the same. I thought it was a really poor tackle on him. It was the type of tackle you don’t want to see, taking one of our attacking players out of the game. He’s very sore at the minute.

“Should it have been a red card? It’s too difficult to say live and I haven’t seen it again, but I’m taking opinion from other people and they say they thought it was.”

In better news for Newcastle, Sven Botman got through the opening 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge unscathed.

The Dutchman made his first start since September before being replaced by Dan Burn at half-time in a pre-planned change,

Howe said: “Sven was planned – 45 minutes was the right step for him. I thought he did very well, so that was a real positive.”

The injuries, however, continue to mount for Howe's squad. With Fabian Schar and Joelinton unlikely to return for Saturday's trip to Luton Town, the Magpies remain without 12 senior players.
