Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia tour continued at Newcastle Utilita Arena last night, but attendees were treated to a superb opening performance from Griff.

The 21-year-old singer opened the Utilita Arena gig with a half-hour of excellent electropop tracks that warmed up the audience perfectly well.

Crowd pleaser One Night from debut album One Foot in Front of the Other was a pleasing addition to a strong half-hour of music.

There is enough strength in the vocal range Griff presents and the genre she represents to get her headlining already, all she would need is a few more tracks to string together a full-length set.

Eight tracks from the artist make for a well-rounded opening set, with Black Hole a strong closer that features lyrics on a similar wavelength to Dua Lipa’s work.

It’s a fitting opener, Griff has a surreal ability as a performer and instrumentalist to engage with an audience who may not know the lyrics off by heart just yet, and that admission makes for a much more comfortable experience, feeding the chorus to the audience so they can join in later.

The best of openers should both prepare an audience for the main event but also make fans of the headliner seek out their own work, and that is exactly what Griff manages here.

In just half an hour she carves out eight tracks of real grace and interest, strong, contemporary pieces with an R&B edge that gives way to the dance-pop influences.
