23 of Newcastle’s most Instagram perfect spots

Having recently been named one of the country's most 'Instagramable' cities, Newcastle World looks at some of Newcastle's picture-perfect spots.

Newcastle came home in fourth place as the most Instagram perfect university city in the UK, according to a hashtag analysis.

It's not the first time The Toon has been heralded for its landmarks and viewpoints either.

The iconic Grey Street was named the 12th most 'Instagramed' street in the UK and Newcastle recently featured in a Rough Guides best 'second cities' list which highlighted the best spots away from capitals.

From majestic landmarks to quite slices of nature and magnificent views, Newcastle truly does have it all.

Here are some of the best Instagram spots the city has to offer...

1 - Tyne Bridge

There's no better to place to start than the Tyne Bridge.

Taking a snap of the bridge's curved top is a rite of passage as you enter the city.

The bridge is, of course, where the Great North Run famously passes over and is a defining symbol of Tyneside.

2 - High Level Bridge

Newcastle's High Level Bridge may often been in the shadow of the beautiful Tyne Bridge, but is a wonderful piece of architecture in itself.

The bridge was opened all the way back in 1849 and still stand strong, looking particularly brooding at night.

If you walk across the bridge you can get a shot along the columns which almost look like an optical illusion.

3 - Millennium Bridge

Opened in 2001, the Millennium Bridge is the youngest of its siblings on The Tyne.

The award-winning structure is a brilliant example of modern architecture which is always being photographed.

If you time it right, you can even see it swivel to allow boats under... think of the timelapse you could pull of then!

4 - Hop on a train

A huge plus of having railway tracks that pass over The Tyne's bridges is the view from the carriage.

Either the southbound trains or Metro run over the river and provide cracking views of the city.

5 - Quayside

It's not all about the bridges either.

Quayside itself is a beautiful piece of water and you can get a fantastic selfie with all the bridges in from the right spot.

6 - The Baltic Terrace

On level four of The Baltic is the outdoor viewing terrace.

The platform offers panoramic views over the river and over Newcastle.

The Baltic is open every Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

7 - Sage Gateshead

Gateshead's The Sage is a controversial structure.

The gleaming shell is an eye-sore to some and an iconic landmark to others.

Whatever your opinion, it's a guaranteed good photo.

8 - Grey's Monument

Grey's Monument stands proud over the city centre.

It has a fantastic history that you can read more about here.

As well as taking a photo of the column, you can climb it for views over the city.

9 - Grainger Market

Newcastle's Grainger Market is a true treasure of the city.

The old building has a magical quality about it with its curved roof and red bars.

There are some beautiful food stalls which make for great photos too.

10 - St James' Park

Whether you're a football fan or not, you'll be able to appreciate the grandeur of St James' Park.

It's rare to find such a big stadium bang splat in the city centre which makes it both a practical and unique Instagram spot.

There are some Newcastle heroes commemorated with statues around the stadium too waiting for you to pose with them.

11 - Leazes Park

Right next to the football stadium is Leazes Park.

Head to the pagoda and strike a pose.

12 - Newcastle University Arches

The Newcastle University Arches are one of the city's most photographed spots.

That's because every graduating student poses for a picture with their gown and degree when finishing their course.

13 - Exhibition Park

Exhibition Park is one of Newcastle's less urban Instagram hotspots.

There's a small lake and Wylam Brewery which overlooks the park.

At night little lightbulbs shine around the lake for an idyllic snap.

14 - Jesmond Dene

Head for a stroll down Jesmond Dene and you could pick just about any spot for an Instagram shoot.

The river runs through the leafy surroundings with twisting paths and stepping stones through the water.

15 - Ouseburn

If you keep following the river down from Jesmond Dene you'll eventually arrive in Ouseburn.

Here the river slows a little and you can follow it around on a narrow path that passes under quirky bridges and by picturesque independent bars.

16 - St Peters Marina

A short stroll down the river from the city centre is the Amalfi Coast.

Not really, it's just St Peter's Marina, but on a pleasant day you might just mistake the marina for a European holiday destination.

17 - Saltwell Park maze

Across the river in Gateshead is Saltwell Park.

The park has a small maze at the heart of it.

It's no doubt intended for kids, but serves as a great photo opportunity too.

18 - Angel of the North

Of course we had to include the Angel of the North on the list.

Head out of the centre to visit, stretch your arms out wide and crack a smile for the classic photo.

19 - St Mary's Lighthouse

Slightly further out from the city centre is St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

The lighthouse stands on ground which becomes a "miniature, part-time island".

You can simply snap a shot of the lighthouse from outside or climb to the top.

20 - Whitley Bay Beach

Not many of the UK's biggest cities can boast having a beach just half an hour away.

Get to Whitley Bay at sunrise or sunset for the best shot.

21 - Ghetto Golf

Ghetto Golf is a mini-golf centre in Byker.

Whilst the activity is the main attraction, designers knew what they were doing when creating the space and have made it an Instagram haven.

You'll go from Amsterdam's red-light district to a wall of stuffed toys to inside an arcade when you move from hole to hole.

22 - Pizza Punks

For foodie Instagrammers, Pizza Punks was made just for you.

The restaurant serves food with a punk inspiration, and that's echoed in their well-decorated walls too.

23 - Selfie Central

Newcastle's Selfie Central was purposely built for you to score the perfect Instagram photo.

There's a themed backdrop for every moment and colour scheme.
