On the penultimate day of NewcastleWorld's 12 Days of Christmas, we look at a Geordie hero who has been a talking topic on Tyneside for decades.

Alan Shearer was born and raised in Gosforth, cutting his teeth on the local schoolboy football scene, before being snapped up by Southampton.

Come 1996 Shearer made his long-awaited return to Tyneside and stepped out at St. James' Park in a Newcastle United jersey for the first time.

Little needs to be said about his prolific career at United, where he scored 148 goals in 303 appearances, becoming the Premier League's greatest-ever goalscorer and a Magpies' legend.

Since then Shearer has, of course, turned to punditry.

He is best known for his appearances on Match of the Day on the BBC, but is a hotly sought after man these days.

Shearer also gives his thoughts to The Athletic and commentates on Prime Video's Premier League coverage, recently left fuming as he watched Ciaran Clark's red card against Norwich City.

The former talisman has also been recording the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Micah Richards this year, often leaving fans in stitches as he jokes with the ex-Manchester City defender.

Shearer is also active on social media and often adds his support to causes started by Newcastle United fans.
