Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is waking up with a sore head and no doubt Googling some quick hangover cures this morning after making the most of a spectacular Champions League night on Tyneside.

The former Magpies talisman enjoyed a rare night off punditry duty and took in the return of European football to St James' Park as one of the fans on Wednesday evening. The Match of the Day star met up with fellow former Magpie Rob Lee before the match, getting on the booze as early as 2 pm, six hours before the match kicked off.

Sharing a snap of himself alongside Lee, Shearer grinned and sipped on a Guinness as he joked that he might have 'peaked too early' with the big night ahead. The 53-year-old did navigate his afternoon boozing well enough to make it into St James' Park, heeding the warning of Sean Longstaff, who told supporters to ‘not get too drunk’ and make sure they remembered the historic night.

Shearer could be seen enjoying the game from the St. James' Park stands, celebrating a 'f***ing awesome first half' at the interval. By that point, Eddie Howe's side had leapt to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn.

In the second half, Longstaff made it three before Lucas Hernandez pulled one back for the French visitors. Despite the goal, PSG picked up little momentum and a late screamer from Fabian Schar capped off the night at 4-1. As the final whistle blew, Shearer was pictured in the stands celebrating with TNT pundits noting the emotion was plain to see on Shearer's face.

Shortly after 10 pm, the star took to X and wrote: "As days and nights go that’s a f——— Belta! hangover coming!!! What a performance man."

We've not yet heard from Shearer today, but no doubt the high of last night is still easing any hangover pain being felt from the revelries.
