‘They’re bottom!’ - Alan Shearer pokes fun at Sunderland before Newcastle United derby
Alan Shearer was made to eat humble pie with his Tyne-Wear derby predictions 12 months ago.
Alan Shearer prefers seeing Sunderland in the Premier League despite Newcastle United suffering two Tyne-Wear derby defeats last season.
However, when responding to a Black Cats fan, the Newcastle legend poked fun at their current league position. Defeat to Coventry City at the weekend left Sunderland rock bottom of the Premier League.
In truth, Newcastle are in no position to mock their bitter rivals. Everton beat the Magpies 1-0 at St James’ Park on Monday to leave Matthias Jaissle’s men sitting 13th in the table.
Alan Shearer responds to Sunderland fan
As part of a Q&A on The Rest Is Football podcast, a Sunderland fan asked about his thoughts on the upcoming Tyne-Wear derby. He responded: “I like Sunderland in the Premier League. I like them even better when they’re bottom, which they are at the minute!
“I think it’s healthy to have all the North East clubs in the Premier League. I’d like Middlesbrough to come up. Those are the games, as a player, that you want to play in.
“As soon as the fixtures come out, that’s the fixture that you’re looking for. It wasn’t so good last season for us but let’s hope we can get our own back this season.”

Shearer also reflected on Newcastle’s dismal showing against Everton on Monday. He added: “We’re really struggling to score goals. I was at the game against Everton at home. It was so poor.
“ I can’t really work out what we’re trying to do. We’re not creating chances and so open for teams to play through us at the minute. We’re struggling.
“They need a big result against Fulham at the weekend because being booed off is not nice. The manager and the players can have no complaints because it was a really poor performance.”
