Newly sacked manager namechecked for Newcastle United job as pressure mounts on Matthias Jaissle
Newcastle United next manager: Matthias Jaissle’s job at Newcastle is currently safe, but that could change if results don’t improve.
Newcastle United have lost five of their last seven matches in all competitions as the pressure starts to mount on new head coach Matthias Jaissle.
While a poor run under any circumstances, Newcastle’s recent form is perhaps made worse when taking the opposition into account. From the seven matches the Magpies have faced, Leeds United, Hull City, Coventry City, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Everton twice.
Newcastle sit 13th in the Premier League table, four points above the relegation zone with 11 points from their opening nine matches. But with boos ringing out at half-time and full-time at St James’ Park for the second match running, captain Dan Burn coming out and saying the atmosphere in the ground is not helping and Jaissle blaming his players for not following his instructions, it’s starting to look like a recipe for disaster on Tyneside.

As such, the odds of Jaissle being the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season have been slashed. While he is still behind Manchester United’s Michael Carrick, Palace’s Pierre Sage and Sunderland’s Regis Le Bris, Jaissle’s odds are growing shorter by the game.
While the 38-year-old retains the supporter of the Newcastle hierarchy that appointed him as Eddie Howe’s replacement in the summer, it hasn’t stopped potential successors being speculated and identified.
Sacked Championship manager has NUFC as ‘most likely destination’
This week saw Nuno Espirito Santo sacked as West Ham United head coach with the side sitting eighth in the Championship table after successive league defeats.
But the Portuguese manager has been linked with a quick return to football, with Newcastle named as his ‘most likely’ next destination. The Magpies are favourites to appoint Espirito Santo next, with Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Fulham closely behind given their current managers’ uncertain positions.
Espirito Santo has previously managed Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League prior to being appointed as West Ham head coach last season.
His spell at Forest saw him work alongside current Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson as the side finished 7th in the Premier League and qualified for the Europa League. He also previously worked for PIF-owned club Al Ittihad.
