Premier League rules restrict Newcastle United after £165m transfer spend - club could still exploit loophole
Newcastle United have bolstered their squad with several youthful additions this summer.
Newcastle United concluded their summer transfer recruitment drive with the signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for £51million.
The 21-year-old Belgian was United’s fifth summer signing out of eight below the age of 22 and leaves Newcastle with several vacant squad places for the 2026/27 Premier League season. Combined, the five players cost Newcastle £165million.
This is because any contracted player born on or after January, 1 2005 are not included in Premier League squad lists but are still eligible to play.

Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba are the other summer additions who won’t be included in Newcastle’s Premier League squad, which is limited to 25 senior players. Lukas Hornicek, Amar Dedic and Nico Gonzalez will take up places, but the departures of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, John Ruddy, Alex Murphy, Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Woltemade still leaves Matthias Jaissle with a squad of just 19 out of a possible 25.
And that includes goalkeepers Nick Pope and Mark Gillespie. Pope has not been included in a matchday squad since Jaissle’s arrival while Gillespie has never played a Premier League match for the club.
In addition Newcastle’s five aforementioned summer signings, 20-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley is a first-team regular who also won’t take up a place in the 25-man squad. However, Lewis Hall, who was not included in last season’s squad list, will now have to be included as he turns 22 in September.
