Newcastle United are a step closer to being ready for the new season after all-but securing another transfer.

The Magpies have all-but snapped up Lille defender Sven Botman to further improve an already impressive back-line.

Eddie Howe can now set about improving other areas as he and his men look to improve on last season’s 11th place finish.

Though, the budget is not unlimited, and Newcastle are going to have to be clever from this point as the spending continues to rack up.

As the Magpies continue about their summer business, we have rounded up all the latest transfer news and rumours surrounding St James’ Park.

Bid rejected

Newcastle have been dealt a setback in their reported bid to land FC Porto winger Pepe this summer.

According to reports, the Magpies submitted a £30million offer to sign the wide man, but a fresh report from Globo Esporte claims that bid has been rejected.

Pepe has a release clause of just over £60million, and it’s unlikely Porto are going to sell one of their star attackers for less than half of that figure.

It will be interesting to see whether Newcastle return with a fresh bid.

Eriksen offer

Christian Eriksen is said to be weighing up an offer from Newcastle United.

The midfielder will officially leave Brentford in two days when his contract expires, and he is said to have offers from a number of clubs.

According to The Times, Eriksen is mulling over several offers, and one of those is said to be from Newcastle.

The Dane has spoken about his desire to play European football which could put the Magpies at a disadvantage.

But Newcastle may well be able to offer a tempting salary package, and there is also real excitement around what the club can achieve in the coming years.
