Marc Guehi was criticised for his performance in Crystal Palace’s defeat away to Brentford in their Premier League opener on Sunday.

The 24-year-old has been the subject of four bids from Newcastle United, the latest understood to be worth £65million including add-ons. But Palace have so far stood firm with manager Oliver Glasner able to start him as captain at the Gtech Community Stadium.

After Eberechi Eze controversially saw him opener chalked off for a foul, Brentford went in front in through Bryan Mbeumo. An Ethan Pinnock own goal then levelled things before Yoane Wissa netted the winner inside the remaining quarter of an hour.

Guehi was criticised for being booked and allowing Mbeumo to cut inside onto his left foot to score the opener. Local Palace paper the News Shopper handed Guehi a 4/10 match rating, the joint-lowest of any Eagles player.

“Was booked for a reckless lunge on Mads Roerslev,” they wrote. “Had to do better for Brentford’s opener. He stood off Bryan Mbeumo for far too long and allowed him to get a punishing shot away.

“A disappointing afternoon from the man who Steve Parish described as a ‘superstar defender’ this week.”

Our sister-title London World were less scathing but his 6/10 rating was again the joint-lowest of any Palace player. “All eyes on the defender given rumours of Newcastle United bids,” they said. “Was led on a merry dance by Bryan Mbeumo before the Brentford opener.”

Newcastle will hope for progress on the Guehi front ahead of Sunday’s trip to AFC Bournemouth. If not, then United could look at other options after Howe warned over the weekend that the club aren’t afraid to walk away from “silly money” deals.
