New research has unveiled that Newcastle and the wider North East is one of the best places in the United Kingdom to own an electric vehicle.

The skyrocketing price of fuel, along with the ban on sales of petrol and diesel cars from 2030, has non-electric vehicle drivers thinking about making the inevitable change.

Figures crunched by esure look into the number of hybrid and electric vehicles along with the number of available charging points per area.

Newcastle came out as the fourth best place to own an electric car in the country, with 8.4 cars in the city per charger.

London placed first with 4.1 cars per charger, but the wider North East triumphed with locations making up four of the top 10.

Sunderland ranked second with 4.7 cars per charger, Durham fifth with 10.7 and Teeside seventh with 11.7.

Commenting on the research, Neil Dwyer at esure, says: "As EV sales continue to rise and the UK becomes more eco-conscious, we wanted to see which areas are already getting ready for an EV future.

“As indicated within our research, it’s crucial that some of these locations invest in their EV infrastructure in order to ensure a smooth transition for those on the road before the end of the decade.

"However, regardless of where you live, if you’re driving an EV or planning on doing so anytime soon, it’s important to make sure you’re properly covered and have the appropriate insurance in place should any problems arise.”
