Man City fresh Premier League punishment claim as Newcastle United handed potential boost

Fresh claims in the media have suggested the nature and severity of Manchester City’s potential punishment for breaching Premier League financial rules.

Manchester City could be facing a major sporting punishment after being found guilty of 114 of 115 charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial rules between 2009 and 2018.

City enjoyed huge success during that period, winning three Premier League titles, three League Cups, the FA Cup and Community Shield.

Attention has now turned to what punishment could follow, with a fresh report claiming relegation from the Premier League is among the outcomes being considered ‘most likely’.

Any sanction remains subject to the outcome of Manchester City’s appeal against the guilty findings, while reports have suggested the Premier League wants an initial punishment confirmed before that process is completed.

Man City relegation claim

According to the Daily Mail, citing sources familiar with the situation, the most likely punishment would involve a substantial points deduction severe enough to send City into the Championship, alongside a significant financial penalty.

The report also claims City could face an additional hefty points deduction in the Championship, which would essentially prevent an immediate return to the Premier League.

Any punishment applied in the EFL would require approval from the relevant authorities.

More extreme possibilities, including City being placed directly into League Two or being expelled entirely, are reportedly considered less likely.

If the reported punishment is eventually imposed, it could have major consequences across the Premier League table.

City currently sit top of the division, meaning a significant deduction would dramatically alter the title race and potentially hand an advantage to Arsenal and the other clubs challenging near the summit. It would also likely impact the European qualification places.

Teams fighting relegation could also benefit if one of the three relegation places was effectively occupied by City as a result of any sanction.

NUFC avoided Premier League points punishment

The situation will inevitably attract attention on Tyneside given Newcastle United’s own experience of the Premier League’s financial rules.

Nottingham Forest were previously docked four points for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules, while Everton also received a points deduction after separate breaches.

Newcastle themselves were under severe PSR pressure in 2024 and completed the late sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh before the June 30 accounting deadline in order to remain compliant and avoid a potential sporting sanction.

Anderson has since gone on to complete a £116million move to Manchester City, adding another layer of frustration for Newcastle supporters who saw one of the club’s leading academy products sold during that scramble to satisfy PSR.

That frustration is likely to be heightened by the contrast between Newcastle’s efforts to stay within the rules and the guilty findings now hanging over City.

Exactly what punishment Manchester City ultimately receive remains uncertain, particularly with an appeal still to come.

The ramifications, however, could stretch far beyond the Etihad Stadium and potentially reshape both the title race and relegation battle this season.
