Newcastle United are set to suffer disappointment as reported transfer target Marco Asensio looks set to sign a new deal at Real Madrid.

Attacking midfielder Asensio has been linked with a move to Tyneside on several occasions over the last year, with El Mundo Deportivo claiming the Magpies had made contact with the player’s representative’s in a recent report. United are far from alone in showing a reported interest in the Spain international with Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool both said to be ‘in the mix’ and Barcelona were also linked with a controversial that would have led to a rare move across the El Clasico divide.

Asensio spoke about his future during the summer and suggested he had made no final decision over his next move, telling Spanish outlet Marca: “I am focused on the national team. When this concentration is over, we will talk. We will see what I will do with my future. Renew or leave Real Madrid? I think there are three possibilities, there is also the option to stay and fulfil my contract year.

“My future does not have to depend on whether or not I will have a place in the next World Cup. Rumours are part of football, and more so at Real Madrid. High-level players are always associated with it. Many players come out every summer and it's something we have to live with.”

However, a decision looks to be close with Marca now suggesting Asensio is set to be offered a new deal ‘in the coming days’ and he could be the first of several Real players to commit their futures to the La Liga champions. The report has stated Asensio is currently focusing on securing a place in the Spain squad for the World Cup Finals but will then put pen-to-paper to extend his stay in the Spanish capital.
