‘I’ve seen enough’ - Alan Shearer orders Matthias Jaissle to do one thing at Newcastle United
Sean Steur has started just two Premier League games for Newcastle United this season.
Alan Shearer has urged Matthias Jaissle to start Sean Steur against Fulham this weekend.
Newcastle United supporters have called for the Dutchman - signed in the summer from Ajax - to be given more game time. Steur came on for the final half an hour against Everton and was arguably the best player for the Magpies.
In recent weeks, Jaissle has noted that Steur is competing for a place with £50million recruit Nico Gonzalez. However, at his pre-match press conference, the German appeared more open to playing the two together.
‘Start Sean Steur’ - Alan Shearer
Speaking to Betfair, Newcastle legend Shearer insisted Steur can be the difference-maker in midfield. He said: “I would start Sean Steur, the young Dutch players who joined Newcastle from Ajax in the summer, because he's better than most in the Newcastle team at finding the pass that can break the lines.
“He can pass it forward rather than sideways or trying the 60-yard diagonal pass. He's the one who can get the ball and pass it 20 yards through the middle of the pitch into a forward who can do damage. For that reason alone I would have him in my team.
“I know he's young and inexperienced, but I've seen enough to think he would help Newcastle open up defences. We're not doing that.”
Sean Steur on Newcastle United move
Steur told Dutch media in September that he is “very happy” with his Newcastle move while discussing the challenge of adapting to English football. He said: “I’m very happy with it… I’m very happy at Newcastle United and how everything has gone.
“I am very much in my place there. How football is experienced there is next level. I learn a lot and you train and play at a high level. It can only benefit you.
“So far everything is very good and I’m very happy. I chose a new adventure. I think I have made a very good choice.”
