It’s Newcastle United’s first time in the Champions League in 20 years, but the side are deemed one of the ten teams most likely to win the tournament.

Newcastle United are one of the 10 sides most likely to win the Champions League next year, according to bookmakers.

The Magpies qualified for the European competition for the first time in 20 years thanks to an impressive Premier League campaign which saw Eddie Howe lead the side to a top-four finish for the first time since 2003.

A return to the competition would have been in the new owners' plans when the Saudi Public Investment Fund took the club over from Mike Ashley in October 2021. However, progress since the takeover has been well ahead of schedule and the Magpies face a summer of recruitment to compete on multiple fronts next season.

Eddie Howe has ruled out blowing huge three-figure sums on any single player despite rumours and PIF wealth. Instead, the club will look to bolster their ranks with shrewd acquisitions ahead of next season.

Newcastle could face a tricky task to get out of the Champions League Group Stage thanks to a place in Pot Four, the lowest-ranking hat to be drawn from.

It means that the Magpies will be placed in a group with three other sides all deemed by UEFA to have a loftier ranking than the North East club.

It means that Newcastle could end up in a group alongside Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan which, although may sound like some iconic evenings out on the continent for supporters, might not be too favourable for the side's progression.

On the other hand, Newcastle could also be drawn in a group with Feyenoord, Porto and Union Berlin in what may be considered a more favourable hand.

Those are just two group possibilities and you can read more about who is in which pot here.

Even with Newcastle ranked in Pot 4 and making their first Champions League appearance in years, bookmakers see them as one of the 10 sides most likely to win the whole tournament.
